Evan looms behind him brandishing a knife. He reveals that he is not, in fact, the lifelong friend Johnny knows, but the shadow version that has followed Johnny through the portal, bent on revenge.

This “Evan” confirms that it was no suicide. The father’s life has been taken to pay the price for what Johnny did, and now he too will suffer the same miserable end.

The pair launch at each other, wrestling with blind fury and force for the knife. Heaving and writhing, they beat each other mercilessly, both bloodthirsty with mortal rage. In the affray, they knock over
the pulpit, and a wounded and bloodied Johnny manages to hurl his attacker into the swirling depths of the green mist.

As Johnny begins to slow down and catch his breath, he hears movement from a darkened corner of the ruined church. Approaching with supreme caution, he sees the bound and gagged outline of his
true friend Evan lying nearby. Evan’s eyes are wild, and his gaze is that of sheer terror. Johnny limps towards him and undoes the gag over Evan’s mouth. Evan yells out “What the hell is happening?! Who was that?! It was me, but it wasn’t!” Johnny grabs his best friend tightly by the shoulders and looks dead in his eyes, proclaiming sternly… “Evan, I need you to keep a secret.”
